Inspired by In Senate testimony, oil executives pass the blame for massive gulf spill, Oil executives pass the blame for spill, and BP needs a crude awakening (Washington Post 5/12/10) and the news reports below.

All those guys who were willing to take a risk to make a buck

Now just want to pass the buck.

Correction: make that a few billion bucks.

Now that it’s liability instead of profit, everybody ducks.

But with all that went wrong, it’s not just one person or company at fault

For the still gushing oily environmental assault.

So much was messed up with the Deepwater deal

As the Congressional hearing did begin to reveal.

The blow out preventer’s battery was dead?

(Jon Stewart joked they used it for the TV remote instead.)

The hydraulic fluid had leaked out?

(If I’d been an oil exec at that hearing, I think I’d have sneaked out.)

But even if those things hadn’t failed,

The BOP might still have not availed.

In spite of the pre-spill “nothing can go wrong” hype,

The BOP’s might have been unable to cut through the pipe.

A pressure test showed the pipe was compromised,

And they didn’t use the parts that had been advised.

Not only that, drillers may have faked pressure test results

Which adds further injury to the insults.

To top it off, Halliburton messed up the cementing,

Thus the fate of the drill rig cementing.

A total of 260 failure points were found in the BOP,

Which made an “accident” not only possible, but likely.

So many different things could have gone wrong,

It seems given something like this would happen before long.

Does the “Drill Baby Drill” crowd

Still think unrestricted offshore drilling should be allowed?

The “leak” may be more than ten times worse than previously thought.

(BP, oh what hast thou begot?)

If the “leak” is as bad as the new estimate says,

It may already have surpassed the Exxon Valdez.

The expedited liability limit is now $75 million,

Which Senator Menendez has proposed raising to $10 billion.

Even that is below estimates of the $14 billion in economic losses

(Enough to get the attention of even the BP bosses).

So guess what guys, there’s more than enough blame to go around

And run all your companies into the ground.

Unfortunately, it is also going to cause a lot of other damage too,

All of which should be paid for by you.

This isn’t a leak, it’s an ecological disaster.

The only real solution is to reduce oil use faster.
