Happy Mothers Day
May 9th, 2010
Mom, today’s your day.
I want to write a poem, but am not sure what to say.
I’d like it to make you happy
Without being too sappy.
What can I say that hasn’t already been said?
What can I write that hasn’t already been read?
Probably nothing, so I’ll give up trying to be unique
And instead, just from my heart speak.
How much does a mother love her child
(Even one like me, who was a little wild)?
How strong is that feeling that only parents possess
And words can only weakly express?
I never really realized it until I’d grown
And had children of my own.
Before that I knew, but didn’t really understand.
Now, I’ve experienced it firsthand.
That’s what I want to thank you for:
Loving me like you always have, and more.
I want to thank you for all you taught me
And for all the presents you bought me.
(Just kidding about that last one
In order to inject a little fun.
It’s true I did love presents as a kid,
But that’s nothing compared to all the other things you did,
And to the love
I was previously speaking of.)
And I want to tell you that the feeling’s shared,
Even when not openly declared.
Because the love I’ve always felt from you
Has always been matched by mine for you.
Sappy? Maybe, but who cares,
Because no other mom with you compares.

Here’s your theme music for today, My Mother’s Eyes, by George Jessel, from the 1929 movie Lucky Boy (I know you’re not THAT old Mom, but I thought you might like the song anyway).
It’s not too late — click here to order some flowers for your Mom.
And here are more Mother’s Day gifts…
