Farewell, George
February 22nd, 2010
Inspired by George Washington’s birth 278 years ago today (on 2/22/1732), and his Farewell Address to the Nation delivered about 64 years later (on 9/19/1796).
Since this is the Father of our Country’s birthday,
We should listen to what he had to say.
George Washington was a man apart.
He always had his Country at heart.
We should never stop, his praises to sing
For turning down the offer to be King.
Washington did much to shape our democracy,
To make it not what it is, but what it should be.
And when it comes to agitating the community with false alarms
And kindling animosity and other harms,
Fox News and the GOP have no equal
(If they win in November, prepare for a sequel).
Harry, even you seem to have dropped the ball this time,
Contributing to instead of lessening the bipartisan clime.
After negotiating the first jobs bill with GOP support,
Why’d you suddenly scrap it and to the second bill resort?
Did Scott Brown heed Washington’s call
When he cast his vote in the jobs bill roll call?
I hope so, since if we to Washington’s principles bid farewell,
I don’t think our Country will do very well.
So Republicans (and Dems), listen to Dad,
Our things might get really bad.

If you’ve never seen the musical 1776, do so. It’s both enjoyable, and educational! It’s interesting to hear the Founding Fathers discussing (in song) the issues that attended our Country’s creation, many of which are still with us today.
And with this revelation about the real reason the Founding Fathers did what they did, here’s South Park’s 1776 episode (here’s the full episode; the revelation is at the 14:36” mark).
Finally, here’s your theme music for today, Why Can’t We Be Friends by War.
