September 11th, 2012

In honor of the victims and heroes of 9-11 on this the 11th anniversary. Let’s live up to their example.

“Can we just stop today and thank President Bush and thank President Obama, thank our men and women of the CIA, the FBI, and everybody that’s kept us safe for 11 years?” — Joe Scarborough today on Morning Joe
“No act of terrorism can ever change what we stand for. Instead, we recommit ourselves to the values that we believe in, holding firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess. That’s the commitment that we reaffirm today. And that’s why, when the history books are written, the true legacy of 9/11 will not be one of fear or hate or division.  It will be a safer world; a stronger nation; and a people more united than ever before.” – President Obama at memorial service this morning
“Two wolves live in each of us, representing hate and love. Which is stronger? The one you feed.” – Starfire

11 years later.

Is our understanding any greater?

Do we grasp more

Than before?

Have we learn the right lesson

Risk of future tragedies to lessen?

Though it’s really just a guess,

I think the answer’s a qualified yes.

Qualified, since humans often overcompensate

By reacting to such tragedies with hate.

Some have done so, but most have not,

Which to me shows what a great country we’ve got.

Here’s Morning Joe’s 9/11/12 panel discussion, including Joe’s comment at the 4”05 mark. Joe, although I am generally critical of George Bush, particularly for his leadership failure leading up to 9-11, I join you in those thanks, and appreciate that you included President Obama in it as well. And one thing that I am indeed very thankful to President Bush for: he did not fall prey (indeed, he spoke out against) the anti-Muslim sentiment that was an all-too understandable (though not justifiable) response to the attack. If only today’s GOP would follow his example. Don’t forget, the two wolves are in each of us: we just need to make sure we feed the right wolf.

Here’s Now’s 9/11/12 panel discussion. ACLU’s Hina Shamsi discusses the “wrong turns” our country has made in some of our responses to 9-11 (torture, drone strikes, curtailment of freedoms, etc.). I’m anti-torture and pro-individual freedom, but I do acknowledge that some of these questions are tough, with no black-and-white answers. The panel does a good job of discussing these issues.

Here’s the President’s statement at the 9-11 memorial service this morning.

Here’s the movie trailer for my source (though I had heard it before) for the two wolves quote: the movie Pathfinder (I couldn’t find a clip of the “two wolves” scene). Like America, the hero (played by LOTR’s Karl Urban) also has to contend with a terrorist attack, as well as his own dual nature. He fights at first for revenge, but ultimately realizes that protecting those he loves is more important. It’s a pretty decent movie (I saw it on TV a few nights ago), though of course not as good as that other movie Urban did.
