Moonraper

Inspired by Gingrich pledges moon colony during presidency (Washington Post1/27/12).

“We will have the first permanent base on the moon, and it will be American.” – Newt Gingrich earlier this week on the Florida Space Coast

“Here Men From The Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We Came in Peace For All Mankind.” – sign placed on moon by Apollo 11 lunar mission (but I guess the “for all mankind” doesn’t apply anymore)

If we do colonize the moon, will we let Big Business destroy it,

And only the super-rich or corporations enjoy it?

Newt does plan to use corporate funding to create his lunar base,

Which means it’s likely to end up being a very corporate-friendly place.

Given Newt’s politics, it could be the ultimate corporate utopia

(Or dare I suggest, a Newtopia).

No corporate taxes, and no regulation,

Just pure corporate commercialization.

Think of how much drilling and mining Newt’s cronies could do.

They can melt down the lunar ice and sell that too!

They’ll profit as that bitch is drilled and mined.

So much for “for all mankind.”

Here’s the opening scene from the movie that inspired our title, Moonraker, followed by a scene from the Apollo 11 Moon landing documentary For All Mankind.

Here’s your theme music, Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra.

Here’s Martin Bashir’s 1/26/12 “Lost in Space” report, including a montage of Newt’s moon statements.

I have to admit, I actually like Newt’s idea of using prizes to incentivize private sector investments in lunar exploration. I’m also not against exploitation of lunar resources, as long as we can do that without (1) destroying the moon (we do after all rely on it for our tides) and (2) the public gets some benefit from that activity. And, I don’t have a problem with having the economics benefits of lunar resources flow toAmerica, rather than to some international body, as some on the left (particularly the non-American left) would prefer. Few on the right realize, however, that turning the moon over to a cabal of multi-national corporations is the function equivalent of turning it over to the United Nations: in neither case would the benefits flow back to theUnited States.
